Bed Bug Identification

It is important to know how to identify bed bugs in the event your home has bed bug activity If you are able to identify bed bugs right away, you might be able to avoid spreading the infestation to other areas of your home which ultimately would result in a more severe and expensive problem and also prolong the treatment.

The bed bug, Cimex lectularius, generally ranges from 4mm to 6mm in size (0.16in to 0.24in). Red, brown or yellow are common colors to look for; and the body is flat with a rusty red color or even brown at times. Bed bugs have antennae and appear quite slender and segmented—and it’s important to know they are wingless.

Identifying signs of bed bugs may sometimes be easier than seeing the actual bugs themselves - keep a lookout for clusters or lines of itchy patches on the skin from bites. Bed bugs are crack and crevice creatures and prefer to harbor in these areas before and after a meal. Finding piles of shed bed bug skin is also a good way to identify an infestation. As bed bugs hatch and grow, they shed their exoskeletons and leave them in the bed. Although it can easily be mistaken for dust, the exoskeletons are a sure sign of a problem.

There are several signs to look for when identifying bed bugs as listed below:

  • ¼-inch flat, rusty brown colored; or more elongated, dark purplish colored

  • Reddish blood stains or brown fecal stains

  • Lighter colored empty bed bug casings

  • Pearly white oval eggshells (about 1mm long)

  • Strong, musty odor

  • Red, itchy bites, bumps or marks on skin. However, bite reactions can differ from person to person.

Bed Bug Treatment Options

We offer a chemical treatment option for bed bugs, which is a long-term, effective treatment that includes an initial service and required follow-up treatments for as long as needed. Follow-up treatments are determined by the technician based on each unique situation and the severity of the problem.

Another option is heat treatment, which is a more effective way of eliminating the complete cycle of bed bugs since they are a type of heat-affected insect. Heat treatment typically resolves the issue in one single appointment rather than months of service.

Bed bug hitchhikers can commonly be acquired while traveling and can also be brought into a residence by way of used furniture. Taking precautions during travel, such as inspecting your room and luggage before bringing it inside upon returning home can aid in preventing bed bugs. For used furniture, make sure to carefully inspect before purchasing and bringing it into your home. Cleaning, vacuuming, changing sheets, and avoiding clutter can go a long way to prevent the spread of bed bugs.
