Stinging Insects We Treat In Wisconsin

Correct identification matters because different insects need different treatment strategies. Our state-certified pest specialists routinely deal with these six stinging insects in southeastern Wisconsin pest management.

Bumblebees

Bumblebees are about 1/2 to 1 inch long, black with yellow stripes, and usually nest in shady ground areas, old rodent burrows, or under landscape features. They are important pollinators but can sting when disturbed, especially around nest entrances.

Bald-Faced Hornets

Bald-faced hornets are about 5/8 to 7/8 inches long, black with cream-colored markings. They build papery, football-shaped nests in trees, shrubs, or under overhangs and are known for being aggressive and capable of stinging repeatedly if they feel the nest is threatened.

Carpenter Bees

Carpenter bees are approximately 1 inch long, black with yellow markings, and often mistaken for bumblebees. They bore round holes into bare or weathered wood to create nesting galleries, which can lead to cosmetic or structural damage over time.

Honey Bees

Honey bees are about 1/2 inch long, golden-yellow with dark brown bands. They are generally docile and can sting once. Because of their importance as pollinators, we typically look for options that prioritize relocation or non-destructive solutions whenever possible.

Polistes Paper Wasps

Polistes paper wasps range from 1/2 to 1 inch long and have a narrow waist with black, reddish, dark brown, yellow, or orange markings. They build open, umbrella-shaped paper nests under eaves, deck railings, playsets, and similar sheltered spots and can sting repeatedly when their nest is disturbed.

Yellow Jackets

Yellow jackets are 1/2 to 1 inch long, yellow and black with a thin abdomen, and are technically a type of wasp. They may nest in the ground, inside walls, or in attic spaces. Yellow jackets nesting inside walls or attics create a more complex situation than exposed nests and often require dust, foam, or other specialized nest treatment methods.

When we start your Preventative Stinging Insect Program in the spring, the warranty runs through the entire year. If covered stinging insects build new nests in treated structural areas during that period, you can contact us to discuss follow-up service under the program. We will walk you through exactly what is covered at the time of scheduling so expectations are clear.

What If The Nest Is Inside A Wall Or Attic?

Nests inside walls, soffits, or attics are best left to professionals. These situations usually require a careful assessment to decide whether to use dust, foam, aerosol, or vacuum treatment, and how to reach the colony without pushing insects deeper into the structure. Treating only the opening without dealing with the colony can cause yellow jackets or wasps to relocate inside the building.
