Wisconsin Ticks
AMERICAN DOG TICK (WOOD TICK)
Reddish-brown with white or yellowish markings. Females have a more distinct marking behind their head.
Generally larger than the deer ticks.
Very common on dogs and cats.
In Wisconsin, diseases from the bite of a wood tick are rare.
BLACK LEGGED TICK (DEER TICK)
3-5mm for unfed females, males are smaller
Red to orange to dark brown
Found in forested habitats in Wisconsin.
Can spread Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, ehrlichiosis and Powassan virus.

LONE STAR TICK
Reddish-brown color
The female has the white spot on her back. The male and has small white markings near the rear.
Rounder in shape than the deer tick and the wood tick.
Actively pursues a meal and not picky about what species it gets it from.
Tick Facts and Prevention
Ticks can vary in color by species, and they have six legs during their larval stage and eight legs during their nymphal and adult stages. Adults can be smaller than a sunflower seed (over 1 cm long after feeding), while larvae can be less than 1 mm.
Common types in Wisconsin include deer (black-legged) tick, lone star tick, and wood (American dog) tick.
